Prior to working in the outpatient counseling field, I worked in case management and intensive in-home counseling with teens and families. I value involving the family whenever possible, as well as maintaining communication with other providers and counselors involved in a teen’s care.

While individual sessions are confidential, which is crucial for rapport-building and the therapeutic process, I keep parents involved in the treatment process. This typically looks like periodic check-ins about overall progress, without sharing the specific content of what your teen shares, unless there's a safety concern that requires disclosure. If there is ever concern of trending towards safety concerns, safety planning that involves parents will occur

For treatment goals that are centered around family conflict first and foremost, I prefer to see the parent instead individually (which can also be for a limited number of sessions if the parent already has a counseling provider) to focus on responding to the behavior.
